Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about physiotherapy in Basel, medical prescriptions, or how to prepare for your sessions? Here you’ll find detailed answers to help you get the most out of your rehabilitation and performance.

Do I need a medical prescription to see a physiotherapist?

Physiotherapy in Basel is generally prescribed by your general practitioner or a specialist. It is recommended for musculoskeletal issues such as back pain, ankle sprains, or sports injuries. Physiotherapy may also be indicated for other conditions, such as neurological disorders, dizziness, or during pregnancy.

How should I prepare for a physiotherapy session?

To optimize your rehabilitation and recovery, here are a few tips:

  • Wear comfortable sports clothing.
  • For a leg issue, bring shorts; for upper-body treatment, a T-shirt or tank top works well.
  • Women are advised to wear a sports bra.
  • If you are a runner and consulting for a running-related issue, bring your running shoes.
  • Arrive 5 minutes early to change in the available locker rooms.

Can I continue cycling or running during my rehabilitation?

Yes and no! The answer is individual and depends on the injury. In some cases, it may be appropriate to continue your favorite sport under certain conditions (especially if it is the cause of your problems). In other cases, you must stop completely. The best course of action is to consult a specialist for a tailored and individualized recommendation.

How long is a medical prescription for physiotherapy valid?

Beyond the initial validity, approval from your health insurance or accident insurance is required for long-term prescriptions. Sessions must begin within five weeks of the prescription date. The nine prescribed sessions must be completed within three months. For the same condition, 3 to 4 prescriptions can be issued.

What is the validity period of a prescription?

Sessions must start within four weeks of the prescription date, and the nine sessions must be completed within three months.

Is physiotherapy covered by Swiss accident insurance?

First, you must report your accident to your employer, who will notify your accident insurance. Then, as with health insurance, you need a prescription from a physician registered with the Swiss health insurance system. You will not incur any costs – everything is fully covered by accident insurance.
